Amit Shah was born into a Gujarati family in Mumbai and spent much of his childhood in Mansa, Gujarat. He was involved in politics from a very young age — at 13, he participated in campaigning during the 1977 general elections. He later moved to Ahmedabad with his family and pursued college education there.
At age 16, Shah joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organization, beginning his lifelong association with the broader Sangh Parivar movement.
Political Career
Early Years
- Youth Politics: Joined the RSS’s student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and later the BJP’s youth wing in 1987.
- Worked steadily in party organization and grassroots activities, building his reputation as a strategic campaigner.
Rise Within BJP
Amit Shah became known as the BJP’s key strategist — often called a modern-day Chanakya for his planning acumen.
- 1997: Won his first legislative seat from Sarkhej in the Gujarat Assembly.
- 1999: Appointed Vice President of BJP’s Gujarat unit.
- 2002–2012: Served as a state minister in Gujarat handling portfolios including Home, Law, Transport, and more under then CM Narendra Modi.
